Electric trailers: The first half of electrification is accelerating, how will the second half of intelligence exert its strength?

Against the backdrop of global "carbon neutrality" and industrial upgrading, China's commercial vehicle industry is in a critical period of transformation, upgrading, and high-quality development, facing considerable development opportunities and challenges. From Krone's e-Trailer in Europe to Carl Power's L4 level autonomous driving fleet trucks in China, the process of commercial vehicle electrification and intelligence is accelerating.

Driven by the global goal of carbon neutrality, green and low-carbon has become the core driving force for the transformation and upgrading of the commercial vehicle industry, and the domestic new energy heavy-duty truck market is experiencing explosive growth. According to insurance data statistics, in the first quarter of 2025, the sales of new energy heavy-duty trucks in China reached 30300 units, a year-on-year increase of 177%, and the market penetration rate climbed to 19.7%, doubling from 8.1% in the same period last year.
At present, new energy heavy-duty trucks have formed three mainstream application combinations, namely the pure electric heavy-duty special vehicle mode consisting of a pure electric heavy-duty truck chassis and a dedicated vehicle mounted on it. It focuses on closed scenarios such as urban construction waste and mining self dumping, and quickly penetrates through with low-cost retrofitting and high road rights advantages; The second type is a new energy trailer train consisting of an electric tractor and a regular semi-trailer, suitable for medium to short distance transportation such as port containers and steel plant short haul barges; The third type is a pure electric locomotive train composed of pure electric tractor and pure electric semi-trailer, which combines the advantages of power, endurance, and adaptability to complex terrain, gradually expanding to medium and long-distance mainline logistics.
Currently, the development prospects of the new energy heavy-duty truck market continue to improve under the multiple drivers of policy support, technological breakthroughs, and market recognition. At the policy level, incentive measures such as "trade in", purchase tax reduction and exemption, and fiscal subsidies have been continuously strengthened to promote the rapid expansion of the industry; On the technical side, the cost of power batteries continues to decline (by more than 40% in 2024 compared to 2022), and the popularization of 800V supercharging technology and mature battery swapping modes have significantly improved endurance and energy replenishment efficiency, promoting the accelerated penetration of new energy heavy trucks into medium and long-distance trunk logistics; On the market side, with the prominent economic advantages of products (with a full life cycle cost 500000 to 1 million yuan lower than diesel vehicles) and increasingly improved charging networks, user acceptance has shifted from policy driven to proactive choice, and the industry has entered a healthy growth track.
In this context, the pure electric trailer train (EV-RT) has shown strong market development prospects due to its technological scalability and scene adaptability. Taking the EV-RT technology platform jointly developed by CIMC Vehicles and Shaanxi Automobile Group as an example, its "main trailer integrated" development mode, through collaborative control and energy recovery technology, has achieved a breakthrough result of reducing energy consumption by 37.7% in the use scenario of mixer trucks. With the improvement of the product matrix, EV-RT is accelerating from technical validation to large-scale commercial use, from dump trucks and mixer trucks to cold chain logistics vehicles planned for 2026.

It can be foreseen that in the coming years, with the release of policy dividends, the exploration of technology costs, and the upgrading of market demand, the penetration rate of new energy heavy trucks will continue to rise. Pure electric trailer trains, with their closed-loop advantages of "technology scenario economy", will play a more important role in the industry transformation of zero carbon freight ecology.
